Joe Littlejohn Award

The Joe Littlejohn Award is presented each year to a person or persons, or an organization, in recognition for or outstanding service to the NMPA. The recipient is determined by the president of the NMPA. It is named after the former track owner from Spartanburg, S.C. Littlejohn is credited with two career NASCAR starts, but raced extensively before the formation of NASCAR.

Joseph Whitlock Memorial Scholarship

The Joseph Whitlock Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in Dec., 1991 in honor of the former sports writer and public relations representative. It is administered by the University of South Carolina’s School of Journalism and Mass Communications. Applicants must be a student in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications. It is a one-year, non-renewable scholarship.

Ken Patterson Helping Others Award

Presented annually since 2004, the award is named after the former director of public relations for Talladega Superspeedway. The Ken Patterson award is presented in conjunction with Talladega Superspeedway and recognizes a public relations representative in the motorsports industry (team, track, and sanctioning body) who has exhibited the kind, generous qualities that Patterson always demonstrated. Eligible members of the NMPA vote to determine the award recipient. In addition, Talladega Superspeedway donates $1,000 in the winner’s name to the Kenneth Patterson Educational Trust Fund each year.

Patterson died April 2, 2004 from complications of myelo dysplasia syndrome.

Myers Brothers Award

Voted on each year by the membership, the Myers Brothers Award recognizes individuals and/or groups who have provided outstanding contributions to the sport of stock car racing. It is named after two of the sport’s pioneers, Billy and Bob Myers.

The NMPA Most Popular Driver Award is one of the longest-running awards presented annually by the National Motorsports Press Association. It is the only major NASCAR award to be determined solely by fan vote.

The NMPA Speedway Motorsports Award is designed to recognize character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports. Each year, quarterly winners are selected, and an overall winner is selected by a vote of the NMPA membership.

Richard Petty Driver of the Year

Determined by vote of the membership, the Richard Petty Driver of the Year award has been presented annually since 1969 to recognize the season’s most outstanding driver. It is named in honor of Richard Petty, NASCAR’s all-time leader in Cup victories.
