Press Release

Cain First Quarter NMPA Pocono Spirit Award Recipient

Holly Cain, who began 2024 battling cancer for the second time in nine years, has been voted by the NMPA press membership as the NMPA Pocono Spirt Award First Quarter recipient.

A veteran motorsports journalist, Cain underwent chemotherapy for eight weeks and a total of 54 radiation treatments over a 10-week period. She returned to covering NASCAR events in person in April at Talladega with her familiar smile and kindness.

Cain is now eligible for the year-end NMPA Pocono Spirit Award, which is also voted on by the NMPA press membership. It will be presented at the annual convention.

“It means the world to me,” Cain responded when informed of her award. “How really fortunate I really am in the midst of all these physical challenges – again – to be surrounded by people who care and embrace.”

Other nominees for the first quarter award were: Fox Sports; Rick Hendrick; Dinah and Willie Mullins; Chris Showalter; Steve Swift; Samantha Tan and Victory Junction.

Established in 1992 and supported by Pocono Raceway, the Spirit Award is designed to recognize character and achievement in the face of adversity, sportsmanship and contributions to motorsports. It is also meant to acknowledge competitors who have overcome illness, injury or tragedy to return to racing.
